History

Brief History of the
Williams Lake Field Naturalists
Club 1971-2007 by
Fred McMechan)
The Williams
Lake Field Naturalists
Club (WLFN) was formed
in 1971 and incorporated
under the Society Act of
British Columbia in 1977.
The principal
focus of the WLFN since its
inception has been to increase
awareness and understanding
of the world of nature in
the Cariboo-Chilcotin. Every
year the club has provided
nature education programs
for school and pre-school
aged children at the Scout
Island Nature Centre as
well as several indoor and
outdoor programs for adults.
The club has also promoted
the conservation and wise
management of natural areas
in British Columbia, especially
in the Cariboo-Chilcotin,
and has been involved in
many land-use planning processes.
High School Bursary
A bursary
of $600 is given annually
to a graduating high school
student in Williams Lake
pursuing further education
in the biological sciences.
Funds are raised at the Plant
and Yard Sale held at the Scout
Island Nature Centre every
May.
